Is nothing I love more than outdoor photography sessions, especially if are maternity ones. However, lately, I’ve been asked to do more couples maternity photos. What is great about this type of photoshoots is that I like getting the dads-to-be involved in my recent maternity and couple’s maternity sessions.
Is great that the families who have embraced this new idea are loving the portraits that I’ve created for them and most of them are coming back for other lifestyle photography sessions.
Maternity photography
Maternity photography traditionally focuses on the mum-to-be who is carrying the baby. It’s done in the final weeks before the birth (usually sometime between weeks 28-34), and is done as a way of celebrating the pregnancy.
Usually I use some of my maternity dresses but normally the mum-to-be prefer to use their owns. Either way is important to feel safe, comfortable and to enjoy your session as much as possible and the optional extra of a bit of pampering and styling beforehand, a maternity session makes my ladies feel fabulous!
Introducing couples maternity photos
If you are familiar with myself and my work and ideas, I’m a champion of trying new things and different styles and setups for my photography sessions. So, I’ve thought to myself, why a maternity photo session needs to be exclusively about the mum?
What about the dads-to-be or the siblings? Yes, is worth trying all the combos. Is true the woman is carrying the baby, but it’s as much his baby as hers. Getting the news of being pregnant and having a baby boy or girl is an emotional roller coaster, in particular when is your first one (or ones as is my case).
Thus, I believe is should be involvement from the dad-to-be as well, if they wish of course. My couples maternity photo session capture both mum and dad along with any children or siblings (if is requested). Creating a portrait that celebrates the family as a unit is what I thrive for.
Natural portraits in a relaxed photoshoot setup
Men can sometimes be hesitant to get involved and be photographed, but I ensure all my clients feel at ease. My sessions are completely relaxed and full of fun.
Dads, don’t worry – I won’t ask you to look directly at the camera, which can feel awkward. I’m not aiming for cheesy photos of you smiling at the lens.
Instead, my photography captures natural moments that tell a story. I focus on the connection between the people in the photos. This timeless style, like the examples shown here, ensures that the maternity photos remain cherished for years to come.
Outdoor and indoor couples maternity photos
Usually, at least up to 1.5 years ago, most of the clients requested to take maternity, and couple’s maternity portraits, in their homes around Hampshire and surrounding boroughs. Now, in particular, if the weather permits it, we go outdoors. I can photograph you in locations such as local parks, on the beach or any other local place special to you as a couple.
